G. P. ABORN.
AIB COMPRESSOR AND PUMP, APPLIGATION FILED APB. 11, 1910.
Patented oet. 22, 1912.
lll/IW AER CGMPRESSQE AND PMP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application lcd april 11, 181. Serial No. 554,599.
To rul whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, Gnomi; l). Acorn, a citizen ot the United States, residing at Boston, county or" Sutollr. and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain neu7 and useful improvements in Air Compressors and Pumps, fully described and represented in the following specification and the ac companying drawings, forming a part of the same.
This invention relates to an improved pump orcompressor for air or gases.
The especial object of the invention is to provide an improved rotary .valve construc-r tion, hut` the invention includes, however,
certaii'i soeciiic features of construction by which the thorough jacketing of the cylinders and vali-e chamber and the efficient drainingT oiC the air cylinder are secured.
ln the accompanying drawings, forming a part ot' this specification, there is shown for purpose of illustration a dry vacuum pump eznloodviiu,T all the features of the .invention in their preferred form, and this construction will novv be descrihed in detail and the features Jforming' the invention then specilically pointed out in the -claims'.
ln the drawincsz-lligure 1 is a central cross section of the pump. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section of th'e pump.
l'eterrinz"r to the drawings, A is the pump cylinder and B the pump piston, a. the single suction and discharge passages at opposite ends ol thc c vlinder. 7; the valve casing and f' the single rotary .':1lve \villiin the valve casing; controllingr the inlet and discharge through passages a. This valve casing l) consists ot a sleeve "extendingr across the pump and at one end o'pcn to the pump discharge (l rexnovahlv secured to the pump, and al the other end closed hy a head 10 through which passes thc valve rod 1'1 by which the rotary valve c oseillated. The casing 7) has the cylinder.ports 'l tor the passages n. and the suction port- Q. and the valve c has the. discharge ports 3, suction cove Ll, and ilash port 5 for equalization of the pressure at opposite ends of the cylinder at the end ot the stroke. vthe suction cove l connecting with central suction chamber 1i througl'i'port 2 and suction chamber 12 luana connected h v suction passage '13 with the suction l). The rotary valve c carries a valve pl'ate 6 between the ports 3 and the discharge chamber 14.- through Which the air yinvention and may loe omitted.A The cylinderg passages and valve chamber are all well jaclreted by the Water jacket d having;
inlet pipes 15 and outlet pipe 16. The valve chamber is preferably arranged heloiv the cylinder, as shown, any Water being, thus more readily and `:Vith more certainty drained from the cylinder.
The operation ot the valve and flow of Huid ivill be readily understood from the drawings and a brief statement. .its shown in the drawings the piston B has completed its stroke to the right, and the valve r: is in position with the equalizing or flash port 5 connecting the cylinder passages a tor the opposite ends of the cylinder so as to permit the air compressed in the'clearance spaces in front of the piston to escape to the suction s'iiace behind the piston and relieve the pressure for suction on the next strffre.y as usual in air compressors. For the nest stroke of the piston B. that is t-o the lett, the 'alve c is shifted so as to connect the delivery port. 3 iviththe cylinder iiuassage .f/ at the left end of the cylinder to port 1 and to connect. the suction cylinder 12 at the ripjl'it end ot thel cylinder with passage o. port l` suction cove 4- and port '2. 'lhe air is now compressed. in front ot the piston l and. when the delivery pressure is reached, the tlap valve 7 on the back of valve c opens and the air is discharged through discharge port x C 3, valve l and tne open end of the valve and 'the operation described is then repeated with the valve c reversed `tor the next stroke in the opposite direction.
lt will oe seen that sv removing the dis charge connection C. the valve cy may he Withdrawn from casing' l). carrying with it the automatic discharge valve, so that the complete Valve is thus readily accessible and removable 'for cleaning and replacement. The rotary valve performs all the ordinary functions of suction and discharge, and the automatic discharge valve serves as a check valve lo prevent the back' flow of air or gases at the beginning of the discharge stroke. The arrangement of the valve chamber and ports is such as to provide for convenient and ellicient jacketing throughout, and, with the ralve below the cylinder, as shown, the complete drainage of the cylinder is assured.
-moved and controlling suction and discharge for both ends of the cylinder'.
9.. ln an nir pump or compressor, the combination with the cylinder and its suction and di. J ports, of a. valve casing exlending; Y. the pump and open at one end, a reino-:fa Je discharge connection at Jche open end, on the casina` rotary valve in the 57 relire-valide through the open end of f ne. discharge connection automatic discharge Valve carried by' and removable will.; the
" rotary Vvalve, said automatic valve being on elle rerarf valve and o enin 4transversely to the axis of rot-ation of the Valve.
The combination with cylinder and its passages' o, of a valve chamber extending across the pump, a rotary valve in the chamber, a discharge connection at the end oi the chamber, suction passage 13 at the discharge side of the pump and jacket (I lor the air passages and valve chamber.
4. The combination with cylinder A and its passages a on the lower side of the cylinder, of a v al've chamber extending across the pump below the cylinder, rotary vali/e in the chamber, a discharge connection at the end of the chamber, suction passage 13 at the discharge side or" the pump, suction chamber l2 below the valve casing, and jacket d for the air passages, valve chamber and suction chamber.
5. The combination with cylinder A and itspassages c, of a valve chamber extending;
across the pump, rotary valve c having discharge passage 3 and suction cove 4 and. con trolling the passages offer both ends of the cylinder, the "discharge connection at the end of the valve chamber, and automatic valve 7 on the back valve o' controlling the discharge from port 3i 4 ln testimony whereof, l have hereunto set my hand, 1n the presence or two subscribing Wltnesses. p .v
