Description

ILPETERS, FHOTO-LITHDGRAPHER. WASHINGTON. D C.
ilnted (States anni 69Min.
Letters Patent No. 104,096, dated .Time 111, 1870.
IMPROVED WASHING-MACHINE.
The Schedule referred to in these Lettera Patent and making part of the same.
To all 'whom it may concern Beit known that I, lsRAnn BAKER, of Tomah, in the county of Monroe and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Wasbing- Machines and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', which will enable others skilled inthe art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification.
Figure l is a detail sectional view of my improved machine, taken through the line x :v,ig. 2.
Figure 2 is a top view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention has for its object to furnish an im proved washing-machine, which shall be simple in construction and effective in operation, and which may be manufactured and sold for a small amount 5 and It consists in the construction and combination of.
the various parts of the machine, as hereinafter more fully described. i
A are the ends of the machine, which are vertical, and which have legs, a', formed upon or attached to them, of sufficient length to raise the machine to a convenient height.
The ends A, upon their inner sides, have circular grooves formed iu them, to receive the edges of the thin board or boards B that form the sides and bottom of the machine, which is bent into circular form, as shown in iig. 1.
Rubber packing, G, is placed in the bottom of the groove in the ends A, for the edges ot the board B to rest upon to make the joints tight, and at the same ytime to prevent the boards B from being cracked or injured by shrinking or swelling, as they would be if driven v into said grooves.
The ends A and boards B are secured to each other by the long bolts and nuts D, which pass through the ends' A, and extend along the outer sides of the boards B, as shown in gs. 1 and 2.
E is a rubber formed by attaching three or more polygonal rollers to a frame, which rubber is pivot-ed at the lower ends of its end-bars to the ends A by pinspassing in through said ends.
The upper part of the rubber E is held forward by the coiled or equivalent spring F, the rear end of which is attached to the said board B, and the forward end of which is attached to the rear side of the upper part of the frame of thesaid rubber E.
G are the side boards of the movable rubber, which* are pivoted to the ends A by pins, the upper parts of which are bent forward to serve as levers for operating the machine, and are connected at their ends by a round or bar, H, which serves as a handle.
The bent part or levers of the sides G are strengthened 'and heid in position by the braces I, as shown in f1". 1.
cThe lower parts of the sides G are connected and held in their proper relative positions by the crossbars J, the lower one of which is made somewhat wedge-shaped, and is so arranged that itsr edge may move along the inner surface of the board B, to tend to lift the clothes away. from the bottom of the' machine as they are being carried forward by the rubber. v K are three or more polygonal rollers, the ends of which are pivoted to the sides G, and which are so arranged that each lower roller may be a little in advance of the succeeding one, as shown in iig. l.
By this construction, as the clothes are carried forward by the movable rubber, the upper part of' the rubber E yields, andthe clothes are rolled, pressed,
and rubbed by and between the rollers, and, as themovable rubber moves back, the clothes fall back in the water, turn over, and are opened out, so that a dierent part of the clothes will be operated upon at each forward movement of the said rubber.
Having thusdes'cribed my invention,
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The washing-machine formed by the combination of grooved ends A, bent board or boards B, bolts D, rubber E, spring l", and movable centrally-pivoted rubber G I J K, all constructed and arranged'as shown and described.
