Abstract

At least one friction-reducing strip (8) is in contact with and covering one web edge, and extends between positions upstream and downstream from the doctor blade (6). An apparatus for coating a moving web (3), preferably a paper web, comprises a counter-piece (1) cooperating with a dosing device (2) transferring an excess of coating liquid (4) over the entire web width except one or both edges. A doctor blade lies on the downstream side of the dosing device, and a means is provided for delivering the web to the nip in between the counter-piece and dosing device. At least one friction-reducing strip is in contact with and covering one web edge, and extends between positions upstream and downstream from the doctor blade. Independent claims are also included for: (a) a similar apparatus for double-sided coating, using two dosing devices instead of a counter-piece and dosing device; and (b) a coating method using the above arrangement.
