Abstract
A carbonitride and metal compatible bonding layer is provided between the substrate and carbonitride coating. DETAILED DESCRIPTION - A process for coating metals, especially one for coating (stainless) steel with carbonitrides, particularly those with fullerene-like structures, comprises initially depositing an intermediate coating layer onto the metal which is compatible with both the carbonitride and metal.
