Abstract
Implantable, tissue-stimulating prosthesis, in particular for the cochlea, that can not only be produced in the form of a single integrated circuit, but also allows great flexibility as regards stimulation techniques and forms of data transfer. Only sixteen electrodes (E1-E16) are required for the stimulation of fifteen different spots (1-15). Each spot (1-15) is stimulated by means of a two-phase pulse controlled by two adjacent electrodes (E1-E16) whose polarity is reversed in the middle of each stimulation period. Even if a type of pulse width modulation is required for the transfer, the exact form for the type can be varied to accommodate completely different stimulation techniques. For example, a single spot (1-15) only can be stimulated during each transfer time interval or several spots can be stimulated during the same time interval. Even if only one spot can be stimulated at a point in time, the system works with such rapidity that simultaneous stimulations of the spots are registered. The system is dimensioned for minimal power consumption and works safely as regards faults so that no one spot can be stimulated longer than a predetermined time period.<IMAGE>
