Abstract

A method of testing an elongate object, comprises feeding the object successively past first and second ultrasonic testing heads, the first testing head being operative to detect the leading and trailing ends of the object and the second testing head being operative to detect defects in the object, determining the precise moments at which the leading and trailing ends arrive at the second head from the moments at which said ends pass the first testing head, the amount of advance of said ends beyond the first testing head, and the distance between said testing heads, and accepting data from said second testing head only in the period between said precise moments.
