Abstract
The pump turbine has three rotor wheels (2, 3; 4), two (2, 3) of which are accommodated in chambers separated from one another, aligned in opposite directions in a common housing (5), whilst the third rotor wheel (4) is seated at an interval above the adjacent wheel (3) on the common shaft (1). In pump operation the water flows out of a pipeline (24) through the first rotor wheel (2), through a second pipeline (26), through the third rotor wheel (4) and the second rotor wheel (3) to the high pressure pipeline (23). In turbine operation, the pipelines (24, 26) and hence also the first rotor wheel (2) are shut off from the water. The water now flows from the high pressure pipeline (23) by way of the second rotor wheel (3) and the third rotor wheel (4) to the low pressure pipeline (22). The first rotor wheel (2) can be seated with a sprag clutch on the shaft (1) so that in turbine operation it can be at rest. Fixed guide vanes, adjustable to the other rotor wheels (16, 20) are assigned to the first rotor wheel (2). Improved control can thereby be achieved both in pump operation and in turbine operation. <IMAGE>
