Abstract
1,189,233. Solvent extraction process. UNIVERSAL OIL PRODUCTS CO. 30 Aug., 1967 [31 Aug., 1966], No. 39675/67. Heading C5E. A process for recovering aromatic hydrocarbons from a charge stock containing at least 75 weight percent aromatics comprises (a) introducing said charge stock in admixture with a first lean solvent stream into a vertically elongated extractive stripping zone, (b) simultaneously introducing into said extractive stripping zone a rich solvent stream, (c) removing from said extractive stripping zone an overhead fraction comprising aromatic and non-aromatic hydrocarbons, and a bottoms fraction comprising aromatic hydrocarbons and solvent, (d) introducing said overhead fraction into a solvent extraction zone and extracting from said fraction substantially all of the aromatic hydrocarbons therein by contact with a second lean solvent stream, (e) removing from said extraction zone a raffinate stream substantially free from aromatic hydrocarbons, (f) removing from said extraction zone a rich solvent stream containing aromatic hydrocarbons and introducing the same into the extractive stripping zone as said rich solvent stream, and (g) passing said bottoms fraction from said extractive stripping zone to a distillation zone and therein separating said fraction into a product stream containing aromatic hydrocarbons and a third lean solvent stream substantially free from aromatic hydrocarbons. Portions of the third lean solvent stream may be recycled to form the first and second lean solvent streams. Suitable solvents include sulpholane, sulpholene, methyl sulpholane, dimethyl sulpholane, methyl 2-sulphonyl ether, n-aryl-3-sulphonyl amine, 2-sulphonyl acetate, diethylene glycol, polyethylene glycol, dipropylene glycol, polypropylene glycol, dimethyl sulphoxide, or N-methyl pyrrolidone. The solvent may contain up to 20% of water. The feedstock may be a gasoline or naphtha.
