Abstract

1,126,342. Centrifugal pumps and compressors. AMERICAN AIR FILTER CO. Inc. Sept. 17, 1965 [Oct. 30, 1964], No.39786/65. Heading F1C. A multi-stage centrifugal compressor or pump has a cylindrical housing containing a number of stages each comprising an impeller 11 arranged in a chamber 12 to discharge through an outlet 28, a part-annular opening (24), Fig. 4 (not shown), and a volute passage into a diffuser chamber 14. The flatter comprises several spiral passages which increase in cross-sectional area before becoming substantially constant in area. The spiral passages communicate with a central outlet 30 opening into the inlet of the impeller of the succeeding stage. Each stage is surrounded by a ring 42. The stages may reduce in axial width in succession for compressible fluids. On assembly, an adhesive sealing material is provided between the rims of rings 42 and the downstream faces of walls 20, and the respective stages are rigidly fixed to one another, e.g. by an epoxy bonding material, and are further held together by end clamps (66), Fig. 2 (not shown). The impeller hubs of the respective stages interfit with one another. The final diffuser stage of the assembly may be replaced by a tangential delivery pipe.
