上述した従来の土台のうち、長尺状のレールは、取付箇所が少なくて済み、手摺り等への取付施工が簡単である反面、予め長さが決められているため汎用性に欠けるといった欠点がある。つまり、時にはレールが短過ぎて所望の張架長が得られなかったり、長過ぎて余剰分がはみ出て景観を損ねるといった課題を有する。この点、幾つもの長さのレールを用意することも考えられるが、使用者にとってはその選択が面倒となり、またメーカーにとっても生産性が良くない。
一方、支柱ごとに設けられたものにあっては、支柱の間隔を任意に決定できるため汎用性が高く、上述したレールのような課題はないが、その反面、支柱の数だけ土台を取付ける必要があり、施工性に欠ける。特に、大きな建物に取付ける場合や支柱の間隔を密にする場合など、支柱の立設数が増えれば、それだけ施工性が悪化する。
