Abstract

PURPOSE:To simplify the structure of a projection type color display device without decreasing its display performance by performing image display control by a color control element which performs selective transmission control over three red, green, and blue and a liquid crystal panel which controls the quantity of light transmission uniformly in the visible light range. CONSTITUTION:The color of light from a light source 1 is selected by the color control element 2 to transmit one of red, green, and blue light beams, the quantity of the light transmitted selectively through the light control element 2 is adjusted by the liquid crystal panel to add brightness information, and a display image is projected on a screen through a lens 4. Respective picture elements repeat red, green, and blue in order at a specific period to make a full-color display. The light control element 2 can transmits the red, green, and blue light beams selectively and utilizes the electric control interference effect of liquid crystal. A method for displaying a color image uses a method for repeating images of red, green, and blue at every image plane or a method which displays respective picture elements of red, green, and black in mosaic and repeating red, green, and blue at the specific period. Consequently, the number of components is decreased greatly and the device is miniaturized and the weight of the device can be reduced.
