Abstract

PURPOSE:To develop a cylinder having a sliding surface which has self-lubricity and is highly resistant to wear by forming many fine grooves on the inside surface of a cylinder for an internal combustion engine, depositing a dispersion plating film in the grooves and forming recesses for holding a lubricating oil. CONSTITUTION:The fine grooves 2 having 5-500mum width and 5-500mum depth are formed on the inside sliding surface of the cylinder 1 for the internal combustion engine at a ratio of 10-50% of the area of the inside sliding surface. The self-lubricating dispersion plating film 3 consisting of Ni-P-BN or Ni-BN and having 5-100mum thickness is deposited to the inside surface of the grooves 2 and the fine recess 4 to hold the lubricating oil is formed to the surface thereof. Such inside surface in the sliding part of the cylinder has the excellent self-lubricity by holding the lubricating oil in the recess 4 and has the excellent wear resistance by sliding with a piston.

b. Conventional technology In order to make the piston slide smoothly and to prevent wear due to friction with the piston, lubricating oil is supplied to the sliding surface of the cylinder of an internal combustion engine, and hard material is applied to the sliding surface of the cylinder. Countermeasures have been taken such as applying a chromium plating film or a dispersion plating film formed by eutectoiding hard 16 particles, lubricating fine particles, etc. to a matrix of nickel, cobalt, etc.

The inventors of the present invention have made extensive studies to obtain a sliding surface that has higher wear resistance and retains lubricating oil better, and as a result, the inventors have created fine grooves on the sliding surface that retain lubricating oil. The inventors have discovered that the above object can be achieved by forming a concave portion for retaining lubricating oil by breaking the dispersion plating film in the groove, and have arrived at the present invention.
