Abstract

PURPOSE:To make the gap of a large scale liquid crystal cell uniform, and to prevent a tendency for generating an air bubble by allowing to stand the titled element at a low temperature by interposing two kinds of spacers having different diameters respectively into a gap lying between the substrates. CONSTITUTION:The fibrous rigid body spacer composed of a glass fiber spacer 4 (length 20-200mu, diameter 7mu+ or -0.5mu) and the granula plastic rigid body spacer composed of a granula plastic beads spacer 5 (8mu+ or -0.5mu diameter) are mixed in a ratio of about 1:1 to form the spacer. The obtd. spacer is provided on one side substrate of a pair of the substrates attached the transparent electrode thereon. The epoxy type sealing material 3 is coated on an another substrate 2 by a screen printing process. Both substrates are laminated each other followed by heating the sealing material 3 at the prescribed temp. of about 120-150 deg.C under a pressure of 1kg/cm<2>. The liquid crystal 6 is poured into the space lying between the liquid crystal display substrates from the pouring hole 3a which is formed on the substrate 2 by cutting a part of the sealing material 2 and then is sealed.

Are liquid crystal display elements generally electrodes? The pair of substrates thus formed are made to face each other with their electrode surfaces facing each other, a spacer is provided between the substrates to create a predetermined gap, the periphery is held with a heat seal, and a liquid crystal is sealed in the gap. For binding at °C, a fibrous rigid spacer or a particulate elastic spacer is used.

However, the thickness of the liquid crystal layer is usually about 5 to 15μ, but if this gap is not maintained uniformly, color unevenness will occur on the display surface, and if the liquid crystal display element is left at a low temperature below iQ℃, Air bubbles occur, resulting in poor display. Especially in liquid crystal display elements with a large display area, it is difficult to maintain uniform gaps, and air bubbles are significantly generated when left at low temperatures.

Although the gaps between the substrates were almost uniform, bubbles were generated when left at low temperatures. In addition, when a particulate elastic spacer was used, no air bubbles were generated when left at low temperatures, but the gap between the substrates was inferior to the gap with the rigid spacer, as it had larger irregularities.

As explained above, the present invention introduces a completely new technical idea of inserting two types of spacers with different diameters into the gap between the substrates of a liquid crystal display element, thereby increasing the display area by 400 mm.
The gap between the large liquid crystal cells, which is larger than 1.5 mm, is uniform, and it is possible to prevent the formation of bubbles when left at low temperatures.
