Abstract

PURPOSE:To measure variation in floating quantity without causing electric discharge on a metal medium disk surface by forming a spacer film on a slider surface to constant thickness. CONSTITUTION:An electrode 2 made of stainless steel is embedded in the slider 1 made of, for example, an NiZn ferrite material and floats over the disk with aerodynamic force. The disk is formed by plating an aluminum-made substrate 3 with Ni 4 and forming a magnetic film 5 of Co-Ni thereupon. The substrate 3 is grounded through a spindle shaft. A voltage of, for example, 1MHz and 5V is applied as a carrier signal to the electrode 2. Further, a spacer film 6 of alumina is vapor-deposited on the surface of the slider 1 to about 0.3-0.5mu thickness. Thus, even when the slider 1 and disk are in contact with each other, there is a gap of about 0.3mu between the electrode 2 and metal magnetic film 5 which is a conductor, so no electric discharge is caused and variation in floating quantity is measured excellently even on a metal medium.
