Abstract

PURPOSE:To prepare a compound very effective as a wet auxiliary grinding agent for calcium carbonate, dispersant of pigment and powders of these by using a copolymer of acrylic acid unit and acrylonitrile unit. CONSTITUTION:A copolymer having an average mol.wt. of 500-30,000 is used as a calcium dispersion as shown in the formula. It is necessary that mol ratio of (meth)acrylonitrile unit and (meth)acrylic acid unit are within a range of 2/98-50/50. Said copolymer is prepared by copolymerizing acrylonitrile and acrylic acid in a lower alcohol of carbon number 1-4 by a polymerization initiator such as persulfate or the like and being neutralized with alkali metallic salt or the like, if necessary, after removing solvent. Said dispersion is effective for precipitated whiting of 0.02-5mu grain size and calcium bicarbonate of 3-10mu.

When calcium carbonate is used in an aqueous medium, for example in coated paper, water-based paints, etc., it is strongly required that the calcium carbonate particles have excellent dispersibility. For example, in the production of coated processed paper, poor dispersibility of calcium carbonate particles prevents good coating and causes various troubles. Furthermore, since the processed paper is dried after being coated, a highly concentrated pigment slurry with as little water content as possible is desired.

Calcium carbonate can be roughly divided into precipitated calcium carbonate, which is obtained by adding water to quicklime to make lime milk, and reacting this with carbon dioxide gas, and heavy calcium carbonate, which is produced by crushing natural calcium carbonate. There is. In recent years, particularly wet fine particle calcium carbonate, which is obtained by finely pulverizing heavy calcium carbonate in an aqueous medium using various types of pulverizers, has come into use in large quantities. Wet-pulverized fine-particle calcium carbonate is produced in various types depending on its particle size, and various calcium carbonate slurries containing 75% or more of particles with a particle size of 2 μm or less are available. In connection with this, research has been conducted into wet grinding aids for reducing slurry viscosity during wet grinding for efficient grinding, and currently polyacrylic acid or salts thereof are mainly used as such aids. However, these auxiliary agents must be added in large amounts to obtain a slurry with sufficient fluidity, and the slurry cannot be kept stable for a long period of time.

Further, in the general formula (I), R represents a lower alcohol residue having 1 to 4 carbon atoms, a mercaptan residue having 1 to 4 carbon atoms, or hydrogen, but if the number of carbon atoms in R becomes larger than this, the performance will decrease. At the same time, it causes foaming, etc., and does not have satisfactory performance as a dispersant.
