The one described in specification No. 2115093 is well known. The resistance of the winding varies with the position of the float and thus the level of the liquid in the tank, allowing the level to be indicated on a visual display device. When the liquid level reaches a predetermined minimum amount corresponding to a given distance traveled by the vehicle, it is necessary to draw the driver's attention, for example by means of a signal lamp. For this purpose, a contact supported by a float and a fixed contact provided at the bottom of the tube,
A warning circuit is provided which closes when the contacts are brought into contacting engagement with each other.

Such a solution has the disadvantage that the float cannot move further downwards beyond the warning position, and the liquid level between the warning value and the zero position cannot be displayed. According to another proposal, the fixed contact is a vane on which the float contact can slide, allowing the float to move down beyond the warning position. However, adjusting the attachment of the blades is difficult and must be done by hand. Also, this solution requires a defined angular position of the float, making assembly more complex.

In accordance with the invention, in a level gauge of the type specified, the contact supported by the float is an electrically conductive rod capable of sliding in a hole formed in the float, the hole having its axis aligned with the axis of the guide rod. The conductive rod supports the holding member at its upper end, and is roughly parallel to the

This warning device is made of a conductive material and has a hole 1 formed in the float 6 parallel to the axis of the float 6.

A chamber 17 is formed which communicates with the inner periphery of the tube. Annular contacts 18 are provided on the upper side of chamber 17 and extend from these to strips 19 and are connected in a suitable manner, not shown, to strips 8 secured by screws 9. An enlarged head 20 is formed at the lower end of the conductive rod 15, and a conductive metal coil member 21 is provided within the chamber 17, with one end connected to the head 20 and the other end connected to the annular contact. child 18. It is like closing a circuit and lighting a lamp. In this connection, it may be noted that the coil member 21 helps maintain the electrical connection between the head 20 of the rod 15 and the annular contact 18 in any case. In practice, some clearance is required between the rod 15 and the hole 16, requiring that the rod 15 be positioned precisely within the hole 16 and spaced apart from the annular contact 18. In this case, it is the coil member 21 that maintains the electrical connection.

In fact, when the fuel level falls below the warning position, the float 6 continues to descend unhindered, and the coil member 21 is simply compressed by the downward movement of the float 6. Another advantage is that no setting or installation adjustments are required.
