Abstract
PURPOSE:To produce a compound material having high heat resistance, high chemical resistance, and high abrasion resistance, causing scarcely cracks nor exfoliation by impregnating carbon fibers contg. fine carbonaceous powder dispersed therein with a liquid carbonizable material comprising a thermosetting resin or pitch, then carbonizing the impregnated fibers. CONSTITUTION:A liquid dispersion of fine carbonaceous powder such as graphite, carbon, secondary particles of carbon black, etc., having 12-0.07mu mean particle diameter is impregnated into a bundle of carbon fiber, and a reinforcing material comprising carbon fibers contg. fine carbonaceous material powder dispersed on the surface or inside of the carbon fiber bundle is obtd. An aimed compound material is produced by impregnating the reinforcing material with at least one kind of liquid carbonizable material among thermosetting resins such as phenol resin, furan resin, etc. and pitch, carbonizing the impregnated product, and graphitizing if necessary. Useful fine carbonaceous material powder is pref. one having 5-0.1mu particle diameter. When particles within this range are used, fine optical structure is formed in the matrix carbon, and fine mosaic structure is obtd. Therefore, there is no fear for causing concentratedly generating brittle fracture in the obtd. products, and a product having high strength is obtd.
