Abstract

PURPOSE: To prevent under capacity phenomenon and failure of compressor by dividing an outdoor heat exchanger into two and operating only one outdoor heat exchanger upon stoppage of a part of a plurality of indoor units to match with the capacity of indoor load. CONSTITUTION: An outdoor unit 7 comprises first and second outdoor heat exchangers 3, 4 arranged in parallel and solenoid valves 5, 6 are provided on the opposite sides of the first outdoor heat exchanger 3. When one of a plurality of indoor heat exchangers 11a, 11b is stopped and the thermal load is decreased, the solenoid valves 5, 6 of the first outdoor heat exchanger 3 are closed at first on the outlet side for both cooling and heating operations. Upon elapsing a specified time, the inlet side is closed to store the excess refrigerant and only the second outdoor heat exchanger 4 is operated to match with the capacity of indoor load. Cooling capacity is prevented from lowering due to frosting caused by lowering of evaporation capacity while preventing liquid compression due to liquid return and a compressor motor can be protected against burning due to increase of load caused by evaporation pressure increase in the outdoor unit 7 due to excess heat absorption at the time of heating operation.
