Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a lower olefin, especially propylene with hardly any by- products in high selectivity, by bringing methanol and/or dimethyl ether in the vapor phase into contact with an aluminophosphosilicate catalyst containing an alkaline earth metal-modified alkaline earth metal. CONSTITUTION:Methanol or dimethyl ether or both are brought into contact with catalyst in the vapor phase to provide a lower olefin. In the process, a modified zeolite obtained by treating a compound of composite expressed by the formula (M<1> is alkaline metal and/or H; M<2> is alkaline earth metal; a is 0-2; b is 0.1-100; c is 0.001-30; d is 12-3,000, n is 0-30) with an alkaline earth metal-containing compound in a solid state or solution is used as the catalyst to carry out the reaction at 300-650 deg.C under 0.1-100atm. total pressure. Since deposition of carbon on the catalyst is suppressed with hardly any formation of paraffins or aromatic hydrocarbons as a by-product by using the above-mentioned catalyst, there is neither reduction in catalytic activity nor deterioration in catalyst even at high temperatures.
