Abstract

PURPOSE:To realize an optical waveguide which is inexpensive, superior in productivity, and can be machined into an optical shape by forming amorphous hard carbon films on the surfaces of the optical waveguides of the property measuring instrument which uses the two optical waveguides. CONSTITUTION:The two optical waveguides 2 and 2 are immersed in a liquid 4 to be measured, light sources 1 and 1 are provided at their one-terminal sides while light receiving elements 3 and 3 are provided at the other-terminal sides, and the outputs of the light receiving elements 3 and 3 are connected to an arithmetic processing part 6. In the property measuring instrument of this constitution, the amorphous hard carbon films 2b are formed on the surfaces of said optical waveguides 2 and 2. The carbon films 2b are superior in solvent resistance, electric insulation, and chemical stability, and protect the optical waveguides chemically and mechanically.
