Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a magnet which cuts air, moisture, solvent and chemicals and prevents oxidation by covering the surface of a magnet, which is formed by adding a thermosetting resin to magnet powder obtained by a superquick cooling method from rare earth metals, iron and boron and then compressing such powder, with a phenol resin. CONSTITUTION:The surface of a magnet, which has been manufactured by adding a thermosetting resin to magnet powder which has the basic composition consisting of rare earth, iron and boron obtained by a superquick cooling method and compressing such powder, is covered with the phenol resin in the thickness of 0.1-50mum. The phenol resin used has been obtained by reaction of phenol and aldehyde such as formalin under the acidic or alkali catalyst as indicated by the formula I. Such phenol resin shows hardening reaction as indicated by the formula II when it is directly heated or heated under the existence of hexamethylenetetramine. Since it is difficult to attain reliability due to generation of nonuniform layer if the thickness of covering is 0.1mum or less, the thickness is set to 0.1mum or more. Meanwhile, if the thickness exceeds 50mum, the processing time becomes longer, resulting in rise of cost and therefore it is undesirable. Therefore, a magnet which assures high oxidation resistance, excellent stability of magnetic flux and high reliability can be obtained.
