Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a solid pet food having excellent palatability, by blending required raw materials, granulating the resultant blend, drying the granular material, coating the grains with an oil, then applying a tasting flavor coating and heat-treating the coated grains. CONSTITUTION:Required raw materials, such as corn flour, wheat flour, rice flour, meat meal, chicken meal, fish meal, soybean flour, peanut oil cake, rice bran, wheat bran, soybean oil, lard or beef tallow, are blended, granulated and dried in an extruder, etc., while adding 15-20% water and/or steam to provide pellets having <=10% moisture content and 6-13mm grain size. The surfaces of the grains are then subjected to oil coating treatment with 1-5% suitable animal or vegetable fat and oil, subjected to roasting treatment at 120-180 deg.C for 30-40sec and coating of a tasting flavor, such as milk, beef or onion flavor or yeast powder, is subsequently applied. Heat treatment in the former stage may be carried out before the coating treatment of the oil.
