A plurality of heating elements are individually heated in accordance with an input signal, and a thermal head equipped with these heating elements is sequentially moved to apply a thermosensitive coloring material to the surface in sliding contact with the heating elements. In a thermal printer that records calligraphy, drawings, etc. on recording paper, a propeller and a rotating body whose rotating shaft is connected to the rotating shaft of the propeller directly or via a rotational transmission means or a rotational acceleration transmission means are respectively connected to the thermal head. The rotary body is rotatably equipped to move the thermal head while engaging the outer periphery of the rotary body with a member running along the movement path of the thermal head or a fixed member.
