Abstract

PURPOSE:To measure the friction torque of a ball bearing under the same conditions as the actual in-use state of the ball bearing, by making the composite load of a radial load and a thrust load upon the ball bearing and by measuring the friction torque by a torque detection system. CONSTITUTION:A radial load is made to operate on a ball bearing 1 by a radial load system 15, and a thrust load is made to operate by a thrust load system 13, thus obtaining their composite load to operate. In this state, a torque detection system 14 measure friction torque to measure the friction torque of the ball bearing 1 under the same condition as the actual in-use state of the bearing. Further, a thrust load system 13 uses a static pressure air bearing 16, and the friction resistance between the external ring 4 of the ball bearing 1 and spouted air is extremely small, so that the influence of the thrust load system 13 is seldom exterted upon the measurement result of the friction torque. Furthermore, the bearing 16 restrains the motion of the external shaft 4 of the ball bearing 1 to one degree of freedom, so that the measurement conditions closer to the actual in-use state of the ball bearing 1 are obtained.
