Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the titled resin which, when wetted with water, is tack-free without danger of explosion, poisoning, etc., by effecting self-crosslinking by heat-drying an aqueous solution or hydrated gel of a neutralized polyacrylic acid which has been neutralized with an alkanolamine to a specified degree.
CONSTITUTION: A highly water-absorbing resin is produced by effecting selfcrosslinking by heat-drying, at a temperature ≥100°C, an aqueous solution or hydrated gel of a neutralized polyacrylic acid at least 20mol% of whose carboxylic groups are neutralized with an alkalnoamine, e.g., isopropanolamine or triethanolamine. According to this process, there is no problem of explosion, fire hazard and poisoning because any solvent is not used and it is possible to obtain a resin which absorbs an extremely large amount of water and in the wet state, is a tack-free tough gel. This resin possesses flexibility even in the dry state and is suitable for sanitary articles or paper diapers.
