Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a forged parts of high strength without tempering by hot forging a steel material made of alloy steel of specified composition containing V and quenching after cooling slowly to specified temperature. CONSTITUTION:A steel material composed of 0.45-0.53wt% C, 0.15-0.35% Si, 0.60-1.20% Mn, 0.05-0.10% V, the rest Fe and harmless impurities and containing <=0.2% S or Pb if required is hot forged. This part is cooled slowly to 400-650 deg.C at a cooling rate of 0.5-1.5 deg.C/sec to allow full transformation. Then, it is quenched at a cooling rate of 12 deg.C/sec to prevent change of state of the alloy steel and to give specified strength. By this treatment, a forged parts having sufficient mechanical strength are manufactured at low cost without necessitating equipment for tempering.
