Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain an organic acid from a metallic salt thereof easily with a small number of dialytic chambers and saved energy, by using an electrodialytic apparatus having plural dialytic chambers consisting of cation exchange membranes and hydrogen ion selective permeable diaphragms alternately placed.
CONSTITUTION: An organic acid is obtained from a metallic salt thereof, e.g. a metallic salt of an amino acid. In the process, an electrodialytic apparatus having plural dialytic chambers constituted of cation exchange membranes 1 and dia phragms 5 having a higher hydrogen ion selective permeability than the cation exchange membranes 1 and substantially no anion permeability are alternately placed between the anode 4 and the cathode 3 is used, and an aqueous solution of the metallic salt of the organic acid is fed dialytic chambers (a) having the cation exchange membranes 1 on the cathodic side and the diaphragms 5 on the anodic side. An aqueous solution containing hydrogen ions is fed to other dialytic chambers (b) to carry out the electrodialysis. The diaphragms 5 are amphoteric ion exchange membranes, and the number of the dialytic chambers constituting the necessay units can be reduced to 2.
