Abstract
PURPOSE: To raise the limit of lean mixture combustion and the performance of exhaust gas cleaning of a cylinder of an internal combustion engine by providing an auxiliary intake channel separate from a main intake channel that is opened and closed by an intake valve and specifying the area of the opening at the outlet end of this auxiliary intake channel in order to develop a powerful swirl.
CONSTITUTION: A mixture gas formed in a carburetor 8 is supplied to a combustion chamber 4 from a main intake channel 5 through an intake valve 10, and the gas is injected through an injection nozzle 22a at the outlet end of an auxiliary intake channel 22 the inlet ends 22c and 22d of which open at the air channel 8b of the carburetor 8 from the auxiliary intake channel 22. The gas injection develops a swirl in the combustion chamber during the intake stroke. In such an internal combustion engine, the above mentioned injection pipe nozzle 22a is made the nozzle section with its diameter shrunk and opens at the position just upstream of the intake valve 10.
