Abstract

PURPOSE: To make it possible to utilize unreacted components contained in the waste liquor, by determining the amount of a phenol and HCHO contained in the waste liquor produced in the production of a phenol resin and adding components necessary to reconstitute the reaction system.
CONSTITUTION: A phenol resin is produced by reacting a phenol such as phenol or a dihydric phenol with formalin in the presence of an alkali catalyst. After the reaction, the reaction mixture is dehydrated in vacuum, the obtained waste liquor together with a phenol and formalin is charged into the reaction kettle and then reacted to produce a phenol resin. In this way, the waste liquor is utilized. In this case, the amounts of a phenol and formalin contained in the liquor are predetermined, a new reaction mixture is prepared by adding, to the liquor, such amounts of a phenol and paraformaldehyde to reconstitute the reaction system, and the new reaction mixture is reacted to produce a phenol resin.
