Abstract
PURPOSE:To improve visual angle characteristics by low-voltage drive by slightly tilting the initial states of liquid-crystal molecules of a guest-host type color liquid- crystal display device and arranging a polarizing plate in parallel to the long axes of the liquid-crystal molecules. CONSTITUTION:Nematic liquid-crystal molecules 14-19 and two color pigment molecules 13- are coincide with an observer's direction on the internal wall sides of transparent insulating substrates 1 and 2 oriented initially in parallel on the whole at a low tilt angle to the observer's direction. Further, a polarizing plate 41 having an axis of polarization in parallel to axes of the initially oriented molecules 14- is arranged and white light passed through the polarizing plate 41 is absorbed by the molecules 13- to perform colored display. Simultaneously, the white light is not absorbed where the molecules 14- and 13- are oriented verically by electrodes 5 and 6, and the background of the colored display is formed. The constitution wherein the array direction of the molecules 14- is made coincident with the observer's front direction provides a guest-host type color display device having improved visual angle characteristics by low-voltage drive.
