Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare the titled compound in high yield, at high rate of oxidation reaction, with negligible solvent cost, by oxidizing xylene with a gas containing molecular oxygen using an queous solvent containing specific amounts of bromine ions and iron ions.
CONSTITUTION: The titled compound is prepared by oxidizing xylene in an aqueous solution containing 0.3W10wt%, pref. 0.5W5.0wt% (as bromine atom) of a bromine compound and 0.001W1.0wt% (as iron atom) of an iron compound, with a gas containing molecular oxygen, pref. with air, at 160W260°C under a pressure usually between 8 and 70kg/cm2G. The bromine compound is e.g. bromine, hydrogen bromide, sodium bromide, ethyl bromide, etc., and the iron compound is, e.g. ferrous sulfate, ferric chloride, ferric ammonium sulfate, etc.
