Abstract
PURPOSE: To efficiently and economically convert a heavy asphaltic material into a light product useful as fuel or the like, by the heat treatment thereof together with quinoline and/or tetrahydroquinoline at a specified temp.
CONSTITUTION: 100pts.wt. heavy asphaltic material such as coal-derived heavy oil, e.g., coaltar, coal tar pitch or a coal-liquefaction product, petraleum distillation residue, pitch, or by-product tar or pitch in the thermal cracking of naphtha, is subjected to heat treatment together with 30pts.wt. ore more quinoline and/or tetraquinoline at 300W500°C. The asphaltic material is efficiently and economically converted into a benzeneor quinoline-soluble component not suffering from problems such as production of by-product coke or pitch in conventional thermal cracking, applicability of catalytic cracking only for a relatively light product, or necessity of an expensive catalyst in hydrocracking.
