PURPOSE:To prevent the generation of residual image and to increase the sensitivity, by readout a signal charge temporarily stored and transferred vertically during the horizontal blanking period, and increasing a transfer capacitance and using all the horizontal scanning period. CONSTITUTION:A vertical shift register 504 to read out a signal charge is driven with shift register driving pulses phiS1 and phiS2, and generates output pulses phiG1, phiG2, phiG3... at each horizontal period. The phiG1 opens the 1st gate 502 during H.BLK period during the 1st horizontal scanning period, and the signal charge stored in a photodetector on a horizontal line is read in a potential well of each vertical transfer line 501 constituted with a charge transfer element at the same time. The signal charge read in the storage section is transferred to the storage section 505 during one horizontal period and read in each element 507 of a horizontal transfer CCD via the 2nd gate 506 during the H.BLK period.
