Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce a catalyst having high activity by mixing powders of active alumina and carbon black, molding the mixture, calcining the molding in an oxidation atmosphere to burn the carbon black and to make it porous and depositing a catalytic metal thereon.
CONSTITUTION: Powder of active alumina such as γ-alumina and active alumina precursor such as boehmite and powder of 20W100% carbon black are thoroughly kneaded together with water and a molding assistant. After the mixture is molded to a spherical, circular columnar or other shape, it is dried, and is further calcined in an oxygen-contg. atmosphere to allow the carbon black to burn away and to convert the active alumina precursor to active alumina, whereby a porous alumina carrier is made. A catalytic metal such as Mo, Co or Ni is deposited thereon, whereby the catalyst for hydrodesulfurization and demetallization of heavy oils is produced. Or the same catalyst is produced by kneading, molding and calcining the powder of the catalytic metal together with alumina and carbon black.
