PURPOSE:To retrieve a desired picture in a short time even if the quantity of picture data is large, by using a retrieval key which sets a part required for retrieval as the start line and the terminal line of picture data. CONSTITUTION:In respect to a retrieval key or the like which sets a part required for retrieval as the start line and the terminal line of picture data, original picture data are gathered by, for example, an image scanner 1 and are displayed on a display 2 through a controller 6. Next, a part required for retrieval in picture data is designated by a light pen 4 or a keyboard 3 to input it to the controller 6, and the contents of this part are compressed and encoded through a data compessing device 5 and are transmitted to a central processing device 7 and are stored in a file 8. When the request of retrieval of picture data is issued from a display terminal 11, a communication controller 9 is started through a transmission line 10, and retrieval data stored in the file is read out by the central processing device 7 and is displayed on the display terminal 11.
