CONSTITUTION:At a position of an image forming surface P of a lens L, the 1st photodetector-array SA is disposed vertically to an optical axis, the 2nd photodetector-array SB is disposed obliquely to this axis, and these arrays output image signals VA, VB respectively. Despite the positions of the detectors in each array, if there is a relation VA'>=VB' between contrast distributions VA', VB' of the image signals VA, VB a focusing state is decided. And, if VA'<VB' in a domain of detectors in rear of position (m) of the detector corresponding to the position P of the image forming surface, a state is decided as a rear focus; if VA'<VB' in a domain of front detectors, a state is decided as a front focus.
