Abstract
PURPOSE: To promote the growth of algae, and to improve the productivity and/or the quality of algae, by irradiating algae with light essentially containing ultraviolet rays, and then culturing the algae in the absence of light having a specific wavelength or shorter wavelength.
CONSTITUTION: Alage of e.g. Spermatochnaceae, Laminariophyceae, Undaria, Chlorella, Gelidium genus, etc., are irradiated with light essentially containing ultraviolet rays, and then cultured essentially in the absence of light having wavelength of ≤340nm, preferably ≤360nm. The light irradiation is carried out preferably at an intensity of 50W250μw/cm2 for 5W20min. In the case of culturing Spermatochnaceae genus algae in sea water or Chrollera genus algae in a cultivation pool, the algae are irradiated with the above artifical light source after the sunset, and the cultivation is carried out adding fertilizers such as nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, etc. to the water.
