PURPOSE:To elevate mode separating and branching functions, by providing >=2 crossing waveguides which cross a linear main waveguide at a prescribed angle. CONSTITUTION:Main waveguides 12-12'' consisting of a Ti diffusion layer, the first crossing waveguides 13, 13' and the second crossing waveguides 14, 14' are formed on an LiNbO3 substrate 11. As for lights of a TM mode and a TE mode, which have been made incident from the main waveguide 12, the TE mode light turns and travels to the waveguide 13' at a crossing point 15 with the first crossing waveguides 13, 13', and the TM mode light travels straight and travels to the main waveguide 12'. In this case, a part of the TE mode light leaks into the main waveguide 12'. At a crossing point 16 with the second crossing waveguides 14, 14', the TM mode light travels straight to the main waveguide 12'', but the TE mode light which has leaked in turns and travels to the waveguide 14', and the leak-in quantity to the main waveguide 12'' becomes extremely small.
