Abstract
PURPOSE:To perform full layer welding with one torch at a small amt. of a shielding gas by moving copper plates for protection against the shielding gas of approximately the same spacing as the narrow groove of two pieces of the works whle bringing their flexible skirts in abutment on the works. CONSTITUTION:The end faces of two pieces of the works 23, 23 are faced to each other to form a narrow groove 24. On the other hand, two sheets of copper plates 26, 26, for protection against a shielding gas are supported to a support plate 25 mounted to a third beam traveling carriage. At this time, the spacing of the opposite surfaces of both copper plates 26, 26 is set approximately the same as the spacing of the groove 24, and the opposite surfaces of the plates 26, 26 are located on approximately the same plane as that of the end face of the groove 24. Flexible and heat resistant skirts 27, 27 are mounted in the bottom end parts of the plates 26, 26 and are brought into abutment on the top surface of the works 23, whereby the shielding effect during welding is assisted. The works 23, 23 are held fixed, and a welding torch body 28 is moved, whereby the works 23, 23 are welded at a low consumption rate of the shielding gas.
