Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare the titled compound useful as a raw material of resins, in high purity and yield, by reacting maleic anhydride with an aromatic dimine in a specific solvent, and, without isolating the product, carrying out the dehydrative cyclization reaction in the presence of an acid catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: Maleic anhydride is made to react with an aromatic amine of formula (R1 and R4 are H, lower alkyl or halgen; R2 and R3 are H, lower alkyl or phenyl) in a mixture of a halogenated hydrocarbon (e.g. 1,2-dichloroethane) and an aprotic polar solvent (e.g. dimethy formamide) at ≤50°C for 1W5hr. Without separating from the reaction mixture, the resultant bismaleamine or formula II is subjected to the dehydrative cyclinzation reaction at 60W200°C for 0.5W72hr in the presence of an acid catlyst (e.g. p-toluenesuflonic acid) to obtain a bismaleimide of formula III useful for the preparation of a thermosetting resin having excellent heat resistance and sufficiently good moldability and processability.
