Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare methanol from CO or CO2 and hydrogen, in high selectivity, with suppressed formation of hydrocarbon by-products, by carrying out the reaction using water as the slurry medium and Cu, Pd or Pt as the catalyst, in the presence of a basic substance.
CONSTITUTION: In the preparation of methanol from carbon monoxide and/or carbon dioxide and hydrogen, the reaction is carried out in an aqueous slurry containing a basic substance selected from water-soluble basic substance such as LiOH, NaOH, etc., oxides or hydroxides of the IIB-, IIIA-, IVA- or IVB-group elements such as zinc oxide, zinc hydroxide, etc., amines, phosphines, and arsines, in the presence of at least one substance selected from the element of copper, palladium and platinum and their oxides.
