Abstract
PURPOSE:To always ensure the automatic focus control in a continuous way, by controlling the focal position of an objective lens by making use of a part of an optical image obtained through the objective lens. CONSTITUTION:A subject 1 is projected to an image pickup element 3 through a main lens 2. A part of the formed subject image is guided to an optical path different from the element 3 through an optical system comprising a half mirror 6, a lens 7 and a mirror 8. Then two focus detecting lenses 9 and 10 having the same focal distance are provided to obtain two optical images similar to the optical image of the element 3 on an image forming surface 11. In addition, two focus detecting image sensors 12 and 13 are disposed at the positions near the surface 11 having different lengths of optical paths in order to obtain the out- of-focus information on the surface 11 through output terminals 14 and 15. The lens 2 is shifted by making use of the outputs of the sensors 12 and 13. In such a way, the automatic focus control is always made possible in a continuous way.
