Abstract
PURPOSE:To make exhaust gas appropriate to be removed of nitrogen oxides, hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide, by dividing cylinders into a group in which a rich mixture is burned and another group in which a lean mixture is burned. CONSTITUTION:Some 1a of cylinders are connected to a first fuel supply passage 2a and a first exhaust passage 6a and the others 1b are connected to a second fuel supply passage 2b and a second exhaust passage 6b. An oxygen gas concentration detector 8 is provided upstream to the point of confluence of the first and the second exhaust passages 6a, 6b. A catalytic converter 7 for exhayst gas is provided downstream to the point of confluence. An air fuel regulator 10 performs control so that a high and a low concentrations of oxygen are set as mutually exclusive phenomena in the first and the second fuel supply passages 2a, 2b. This results in making the exhaust gas appropriate to be removed of nitrogen oxides, hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide.
