Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a tapered rod easily and efficiently without problems of breakage etc. in stretch deforming a metallic material to which temperature gradient is given by specifying working strain rate in the part of smallest diameter.
CONSTITUTION: Working strain rate ε in a part of metallic material corresponding to the minimum diameter (homogeneous maximum drawing) part of a tapered rod, usually the maximum heating temperature part, is made to 0.5W 1,000%/sec. The strain rate ε is determined by the expression[Ao: original sectional area (cm2) of the material, A: sectional area (cm2) of minimum diameter part of the taper rod after stretching, t: time (sec) of stretching]. When the strain rate is less than the lower limit, temperature gradient given in axial direction is flattened and it becomes difficult to give desired tapered form. If greater than the upper limit, heat generation due to plastic deformation becomes great, and local contraction due to local heat generation occurs, and problems of breakage can take place.
