Abstract

PURPOSE: To detect the top position and the tail position of a vehicle on a lane at high speed and low cost, by a method wherein while a bird's-eye view of a road is being commanded the picture of a lane of the road is converted into a picture signal according to the change in luminance of the lane by employing a photoelectric transducer and taken out successively in a time serial manner.
CONSTITUTION: A timing generating part 21 synchronizes with a picture scanning timing and feeds the synchronizing signal to a control part 22. The control part 22 delivers a signal so as to open a gate 15 in synchronism with the timing that picture signals in a lane are processed and corresponding signals "1" or "0" are delivered, according to the signal from the timing generating part 21. After all the picture signals on one scanning line are fed, the control part 22 delivers a signal so as to open a gate 19 in synchronism with the timing that the signals corresponding to those on one scanning line are processed and corresponding signals "1" or "0" are delivered from a comparator 18. Moreover, the control part 22 transmits signals to a counter 16, a buffer 17 and a vehicle position determining part 20 respectively.
