Abstract
PURPOSE: To decrease the concentrations of organic acid components and color components in the wash water discharged from the ethylene oxide preparation process and containing ethylene glycol, by the chromatographic treatment of the wash water using a cation exchange resin as a separation carried and water as a developing solvent.
CONSTITUTION: In the ethylene oxide preparation process containing the water- washing step of the reaction gas containing ethylene oxide obtained by the vapor-phase catalytic oxidation of ethylene with oxygen, the aqueous solution discharged from the step and containing ethylene glycol, organic acid components, and color components is properly concentrated, and subjected to the ordinary chromatographic separation using a cation exchange resin, esp. a strongly acidic cation exchange resin obtained by the sulfonation of a styrene-divinylbenzene crosslinked copolymer as a separation carrier, and water as a developing solvent. An aqueous solution of ethylene glycol almost free from organic components and color components can be obtained by this process.
