Abstract

NEW MATERIAL:γ-Glutamyl-p-azo-anilide of the formula (R is substituted aromatic group).
EXAMPLE: γ-Glutamyl-p-(4-sulfophenylazo)anilide.
USE: A substrate for measuring the activity of γ-glutamyl transpeptidase having good water-solubility without carcinogenicity. The substrate is capable of determining the orange color of liberated p-aminophenyl azo compound directly and scarcely affected by a serum of patients with icterus on the blank.
PROCESS: N-Phthalyl-γ-glutamic acid anhydride is reacted with a p-aminophenylazo compound to give N-phthalyl-γ-glutamyl-p-azo-anilide, which is then reacted with hydrazine to afford the compound of the formula.
