Abstract

PURPOSE: A nematic liquid crystal composition having an improved change in characteristics with a change in temperature, comprising a nematic liquid crystal having dielectric anisotropy and a condensate of an alkylbenzaldehyde and a 2-alkyl- 1,3-propylene glycol.
CONSTITUTION: A liquid crystal composition comprising a compound represented by the formula, wherein R1 and R2 are each a C1W10 alkyl, an alkoxyl or carboxyl; a nematic liquid crstal having positive dielectric anisotropy and/or a nematic liquid crystal-like compound having positive dielectric anisotropy. And a liquid crystal composition comprising the above-mentioned liquid crystal composition; a nematic liquid crystal having negative dielectric anisotropy and/or a nematic liquid crystal- like compound. The compound of formula I is prepared by condensing an alkylbenzaldehyde with a 2-alkyl-1,3-propylene glycol in the presence of a dilute acid.
