Abstract
PURPOSE:To enable an optical fiber base material contg. little impurities to be manufactured by putting an unnecessary deposit discharging pipe moving together with a heating burner and connected to an exhaust means in the exhaust side support pipe of an apparatus for manufacturing the titled material by gaseous phase chemical reaction so that the discharging pipe is freely pulled back. CONSTITUTION:The apparatus for manufacturing an optical fiber base material by known gaseous phase chemical reaction is composed essentially of reaction tube 1, gas introduction side and exhaust side support pipes 2, 3 and heating burner 9. Unnecessary deposit 4 discharging pipe 5 moving together with burner 12 and set on moving stand 11 which can be moved back and forth with motor 10 is put in pipe 3 so that pipe 5 is freely pulled back. While burner 12 reaches point B from point A, pipe 5 is pulled back from pipe 3 not to disturb the flow rate of a glass forming gas. While burner 12 moves from point B to point A, unnecessary oxide soot 4 is sucked from pipe 5 and discharged from outlet 8 through flexible pipe 6. Thus, an impurity-free optical fiber base material with a less optical transmission loss is obtd.
