Abstract

PURPOSE: To enable to remove Cs certainly and safely by a method wherein, in removing Cs from a high level radioactive waste liquid, fibrous titania hydrate is used as the adsorption and ion exchange agent of Cs to fix said Cs.
CONSTITUTION: The fibrous K2O.nTiO2 (n=1W6) is prepared from a molten mixture of TiO2 and K2O and K2O is eluted by an aqueous acid solution to prepare the fibrous titania hydrate TiO2.mH2O (m=0W3). The resulting titania hydrate is immersed in the Cs containing high level radioactive waste liquid to adsorb Cs or to form cesium titanate by ion exchange. Subsequently, in order to fix Cs, said adsorbed or ion exchanged Cs is mixed with an oxide, a carbonate, a nitrate or a hydroxide of a divalent metal such as Mg, Co, Ni, Zn or Cu or a trivalent metal such as Al, Fe, Cr, Mn, Co or Ga and, according to necessity, TiO2 is moreover mixed and the obtained mixture is heated at 500W1,300°C to form hollandite type cesium titanate compound or a mixture of said cesium titanate and TiO2 and, after molding under pressure, Cs is fixed stably by sintering.
